Depression, or Major Depressive Disorder, is more than “feeling sad” or going through a rough patch.

In actuality, depression is a prevalent, serious mental health condition that many of us will encounter at some point. It affects how you feel, think, and handle daily life. Despite its widespread nature, people often misunderstand or overlook depression, leading to individuals normalizing their symptoms instead of addressing them.

Ignoring your symptoms of depression can have a profound effect on your daily functioning and overall well-being for weeks, months, or even years. If you are struggling with a persistent feeling of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness, meeting with a professional OKC psychiatrist or psychotherapist can help. At Resilient Psychotherapy & Psychiatry, we are here to help alleviate your symptoms of depression and provide insulation for the future.

What to Know About MDD

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a mental health condition characterized by a persistently depressed mood. While we all go through periods of sadness or loneliness due to life’s challenges, the symptoms of depression last longer than these typical emotional responses and can disrupt many parts of your life. Often, individuals find themselves withdrawing from social activities, struggling with responsibilities, or neglecting personal care. Some turn to self-medicating or other risky behaviors.

Depression varies in its severity, ranging from mild to severe. In its most mild form, your symptoms may not stop you from leading a seemingly “normal life,” though you may feel constantly weighed down. In its most severe form, depression can make it difficult to get out of bed, perform basic tasks, or even care for yourself. Seeking help is important – at any level of severity.

Common Symptoms of Depression

Depression can present itself in various ways, and not everyone will experience the same symptoms at the same severity. However, there are common signs that you should be aware of. These symptoms include:

  • Persistent Sadness: An ongoing feeling of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness that does not seem to go away.
  • Loss of Interest: A marked decrease in interest or pleasure in activities you previously enjoyed, such as hobbies, socializing, or work.
  • Fatigue: A pervasive lack of energy or feeling tired all the time, even after getting adequate rest.
  • Changes in Sleep Patterns: Sleeping too much, difficulty falling asleep, or difficulty staying asleep.
  • Appetite Changes: Either eating too much or too little due to changes in appetite, leading to significant weight loss or weight gain.
  • Difficulty Concentrating: Trouble focusing, making decisions, or remembering things.
  • Feelings of Guilt of Worthlessness: An overwhelming sense of worthlessness or guilt, often about things that typically would not cause these feelings.
  • Physical Symptoms: Unexplained aches and pains, headaches, or digestive problems that do not have a clear physical cause.
  • Thoughts of Death or Suicide: In severe cases, depression can lead to thoughts of death or suicide; in this situation, seek immediate help.

If you experience any of these symptoms but are unsure whether you have depression, an OKC psychiatrist or psychotherapist can provide a diagnosis and recommend treatments. The Anxiety & Depression Association of America also provides an online screening for depression, which you can share with the professional during your appointment.
