Anxiety Is a Universal Human Experience

It’s the nervous flutter before a presentation, the worry about a loved one, or the jolt of adrenaline in a dangerous situation. In these moments, anxiety is a normal, even helpful, emotion. But for many adults, anxiety isn’t just a fleeting feeling; it can become a constant, overwhelming presence that casts a shadow over your life.

If you’re living with a persistent sense of dread, disruptive panic, or a fear that dictates or limits your world, you’re not alone. What Are Anxiety Disorders?

Anxiety disorders refer to a broad category that consists of several mental health conditions. Many share common symptoms, such as persistent fear or worry, often escalating over time, which can significantly interfere with your daily life, relationships, and more. It is important to understand that these disorders are not a sign of weakness; they are real, serious, and treatable medical conditions.

Adults can experience anxiety in many different forms. Understanding the specific type of anxiety disorders you may be facing is the first step toward effective treatment.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Do you find yourself in a constant state of worry about a variety of things—your health, finances, family, or work—even when there is little or no reason to be? This is the hallmark of GAD.

  • What It Looks Like: You may feel restless, on edge, and easily fatigued. You might also have trouble concentrating, feeling like your mind is always “blank.” Many also experience irritability, muscle tension, and difficulty with falling asleep or staying asleep because their mind won’t shut off.
  • How GAD Affects Adults: GAD can be exhausting. It can drain your mental and physical energy, making it difficult to be present with family, focus at work, or enjoy time to yourself without worry or fear.
Panic Disorder

Panic disorder consists of sudden, unexpected episodes of intense fear, commonly known as panic attacks. They can occur out of the blue, which creates a vicious cycle where one fears when the next one will happen.

  • What It Looks Like: A panic attack is a wave of symptoms that impact you both physically and psychologically. You might experience a pounding heart, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, a choking sensation, and chest pain. Many feel a sense of impending doom or a fear of losing control.
  • How Panic Disorders Affect Adults: Panic disorder may cause you to avoid places or situations where a previous attack has occurred, which can lead to isolation.
Social Anxiety Disorder

Social anxiety disorders involve an intense fear of being watched or judged by others. This fear can apply to specific situations, like public speaking, or more general situations, like typical social interactions.

  • What It Looks Like: A person with social anxiety disorder may actively avoid social gatherings, meeting new people, or speaking up in meetings. When these situations cannot be avoided, they are met with intense anxiety paired with physical symptoms like blushing, sweating, and nausea.
  • How It Affects Adults: Social anxiety can significantly hinder your professional advancement, prevent you from forming meaningful relationships, and lead to deep feelings of loneliness.

Other conditions also have anxiety as a core component, such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Our team has the expertise to diagnose and provide treatment for these complex conditions as well.
