Making the decision to seek support is one of the most courageous and empowering steps you can take.

At Resilient Psychotherapy & Psychiatric Services, we understand there are many reasons why you might seek professional help. Whether you’re dealing with persistent anxiety and depression, learning to navigate a more complex diagnosis like bipolar disorder or OCD, or managing a difficult life transition, our team is here to support you.

We also know that once you’ve decided to seek help, the next question can be confusing: “Which type of mental health professional is right for me?” With various titles like psychiatrist and psychologist, it can be hard to know where to start. We’ve outlined these different roles to help you choose the right professional to meet your goals with confidence.

The Different Types of Mental Health Professionals

Psychiatrist

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (M.D. or D.O.) who specializes in mental health. With their expertise in the biological and neurological aspects of mental illness, they are licensed to diagnose conditions, provide therapy, and prescribe and manage medication.

Psychologist

A psychologist holds a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) and is a highly trained expert in human behavior, thought, and emotion. Their primary focus is psychotherapy (talk therapy), using evidence-based approaches to help you develop coping skills, change thought patterns, and process emotions. They can also provide evaluations, but usually do not prescribe medication.

Other Skilled Mental Health Professionals

While psychiatrists and psychologists are two of the most common providers, the mental health field includes a variety of other highly skilled professionals. You may also encounter the following:

  • Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs)
  • Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs)
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs)
At Resilient Psychotherapy & Psychiatric Services, our team includes an experienced psychiatrist, Dr. Sean Whelan, and a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Christina Whelan. Through our concierge model, we limit the number of patients we see. This allows us to dedicate more time and focus to you, creating a plan that meets your unique needs.

What can I expect during my evaluation?

During your evaluation, we’ll hold a collaborative conversation to understand you as a whole person. We will discuss your symptoms and history to assess your cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. We will then share the results and work with you to determine the next steps in your treatment.

Who should I schedule with first—the psychologist or the psychiatrist?

If you are primarily seeking talk therapy to build coping skills or navigate life’s challenges, starting with our psychologist, Dr. Christina Whelan, is an excellent first step.

If you know or believe that medication will be a necessary part of your treatment, starting with our psychiatrist, Dr. Sean Whelan, is recommended.

If you’re unsure, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We can help guide you to the right mental health professional based on your needs.

How is my privacy protected?

Your privacy and confidentiality are our top priority. Beyond strictly adhering to HIPAA regulations and other laws, our office is intentionally designed for discretion. We offer separate waiting areas and a private exit to ensure your experience is as comfortable and confidential as possible from the moment you arrive.

How long does treatment usually last?

The duration varies based on your personal goals, needs, and the challenges you’re working through. Some individuals find relief and achieve their goals in a few months of focused work, while others with more long-standing concerns may benefit from longer-term support.
